The average adult needs 7-8 hours of sleep each night.

According to Dr. Nguyen Thi Minh Duc, Head of the Department of Internal Medicine, Neurology Center, Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, there are many different types of sleep disorders such as insomnia, difficulty sleeping, and inability to sleep deeply.

The choice of treatment depends on the type of sleep disorder, the symptoms you are experiencing, the cause and your doctor’s instructions.

Sleep apnea: Patients with sleep apnea will experience pauses in breathing several times a night.

Patients should also avoid alcohol and sleeping pills.

Insomnia: One of the first solutions doctors advise people with insomnia to apply is to change sleeping habits.

Exercising regularly and maintaining a healthy diet, not eating too much, and not using electronic devices before going to bed are also important things to note.

A dark, quiet bedroom helps you fall asleep easily.

Snoring: Snoring is also a form of sleep disorder.

Patients can ask their doctor about using anti-snoring nasal strips (which help keep the nostrils open to allow more air in) or using a mouthguard to pull the jaw and tongue forward, keeping the mouth open.

Difficulty sleeping during pregnancy: Poor sleep and difficulty sleeping during pregnancy is a type of sleep disorder that women face during the 9 months of pregnancy.

Pregnant women should also take a nap, drink warm milk or relax in a warm bath before going to bed.

Narcolepsy: People with narcolepsy easily fall asleep even when they don’t want to, and don’t feel sleepy.

If you visit a medical facility, your doctor may also prescribe some medications to help you stay more alert and treat sudden loss of muscle control when waking up.
