Melania Trump speaks at the Republican convention.

It was the most important speech ever in Melania Trump’s life, and her husband – the Republican presidential candidate – wanted it to be perfect.

The speech was made by Mrs. Trump during the opening ceremony of the Republican National Convention, where her husband officially received the nomination to represent this party running for the White House.

But things didn’t go as planned.

Correct yourself

Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law and top advisor, was the one who hired experts Scully and McConnell to write the speech.

In that process, she relied on assistant Meredith McIver, a former ballet dancer who graduated with an English major and is very close to the Trump family.

But her quiet plan to draft her own speech led to the most awkward moment of the Republican convention.

In her speech broadcast during prime time, Mrs. Trump opened up about a series of life lessons, about why `your word is your commitment`, about `your dreams and

Meredith McIver yesterday apologized for the similarities in the two speeches.

In interviews, Republican speechwriters described the painstaking vetting they often do with their speeches, conducted by a team of experts with the help of various departments.

`It’s a pretty standard program,` said Stuart Stevens, who wrote speeches for Mitt Romney and his wife during the 2012 election campaign, commenting on the software that helps detect similarities in word choice and structure.

Mr. Trump’s team declined to say who or how many senior leaders in the campaign read and reviewed the speech.

Mr. Trump’s associates and allies have dismissed the controversy about the speech as distracting details that are not worth mentioning.

`93% of the speech’s content is completely different,` New Jersey Governor Chris Christie declared.

Still, across the United States, Republican political activists and speechwriters expressed confusion that the organization would allow such a problem to occur.

`It’s as if a person trying to row a boat across a river shoots a hole in his boat,` Stevens said.
