Wuhan city ended its blockade on April 8, but Feng Jing continues to monitor 5,400 residents of Tan Hua Lam neighborhood to understand their travel itinerary and health to ensure Covid-19 does not occur.

Feng holds the position of chairman of the neighborhood committee, one of thousands of people who in late January were assigned the task of ensuring residents in the area under their management stayed indoors, preventing the spread of nCoV in Wuhan.

Neighborhood committees, with a core of Chinese Communist Party members, play a key role in efforts to control Covid-19.

Wuhan is where Covid-19 originated and is also the epicenter of the epidemic most severely affected in China.

However, the high spirit of vigilance and movement control measures also raise questions about the duration of monitoring to prevent Covid-19, as well as whether the city can truly return to normal life.

`We have not yet allowed residents to leave their homes. Only those who have returned to work can go out if they can prove their health condition,` Feng said last week.

`The residents are extremely united, hardworking and always support us. They comply with all the committee’s arrangements. We do not let down our guard,` Ms. Feng said when asked if the neighborhood committee

In addition to ensuring the lockdown, the committees are also responsible for monitoring people’s health, measuring body temperatures daily and reporting any signs that require attention such as coughs and headaches.

Many residents expressed satisfaction with the neighborhood committee’s monitoring measures, saying it was effective in preventing the spread of Covid-19.

`The blockade has not really been lifted. Residential areas still apply control measures, restricting people from going out,` one person wrote on the social network Weibo on April 13.

Still, concerns about asymptomatic infections and the risk of a second outbreak keep neighborhood committees on guard.

Peng Jing, chairman of the neighborhood committee, said they immediately took action after discovering an asymptomatic case on April 11.

China’s National Health Commission (NHC) said on April 16 that mainland China recorded 46 more cases of nCoV infection and no new deaths, bringing the total number of infections to 82,341, while the number of deaths
